Big Brown will not be your 2008 Triple Crown winner. I’m not quite as surprised as everyone else, since I’ve seen the extra length of track at the Belmont fell many a superior looking horse. That having been said, while watching the race, I was quite sure Big Brown would pull it off, as he was sitting beautifully, perfectly, going into the back stretch, but he never made his move.

Was it the heat? Was it the hoof? Hard to say, but however you slice it, Da’Tara is your 2008 Belmont Stakes Champion. If you had Da’Tara to win the run for the carnations, congratulations, you won $79 for a $2 ticket. You are also a cheating, race-fixing SOB and I’m calling the gaming commission on you.

Here’s Big Brown coming from the 20th post position to win the 134th Kentucky Derby, an exciting race marred by tragedy when place horse filly Eight Belles, broke both ankles moments after the race and had to be euthanized, making it the second year out of three that a Triple Crown finishing horse had to be put down. Animal rights groups are in arms, horse racing enthusiasts say its just part of the game. You’ll have to make your own decision.

Those in the “part of the game” camp will be looking forward to seeing if Big Brown can repeat at the Preakness on May 17th.
